Capacity building in ASEAN for Clean
Technologies in Industry & Transport (CTIT)
The main role of CD in this ASEAN Clean
Transport and Energy promotion project is to help identify and
mobilize programme participants from the public and private
sectors, both in EU and ASEAN countries. CD is also running a
project on promotion of New & Renewable Energy and Small Power
Stations in Indonesia promoting use of EU equipment suppliers
and Export Credit facilities.
Rapid economic growth in ASEAN means
demand for Clean Technologies for Transport and Energy for
industry. The main renewable transport option is biodiesel from
palm oil or from Jatropha, and ethanol from sugarcane. The main
clean energy trend is towards new & renewable energy, especially
biomass based cogeneration systems from plantations & municipal
waste. There are also non-oil and clean energy options for
industrial sectors (e.g. mini hydro, waste to energy, diesel-gas
conversions and clean coal).
The Capacity Building in Clean
Technologies in the Industry & Transport Sectors (CTIT)
project is supported by the EU Asia Pro Eco Programme and
supports operational dialogue on best technologies between
Belgium, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Vietnam, along with
Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos PDR., Thailand and Philippines.

This clean transport & clean energy
project comprises an ASEAN regional survey on biomass fuels
& technologies followed by preparatory workshops in Jakarta and
Hanoi in February 2006 on biomass to energy and biomass to
transport fuel, respectively, followed by EU-ASEAN conferences
in September promoting Best Available Techniques including
energy-efficiency bench-marking.
CD is helping evolve an innovative EU-ASEAN
Promotion Strategy in support of this Clean Transport and
Clean Energy programme. CD will help mobilize ASEAN public
sector decision makers via the ASEAN Centre for Energy. CD will
also identify and mobilize EU-ASEAN private sector participants
interested in Clean Transport and Clean Energy technologies. The
private sector and EU-ASEAN Research and Development Centres are
expected to produce most of the specialist papers for the
workshops & conferences. CDP support staff and advisors will
work on these issues in EU and ASEAN Member States, identifying
potential partners for trade & investment.
